How to make the most of lectures and tutorials…

You arrive at University to study the subject that you are most passionate about, but new teaching methods often create new and unexpected challenges. Here are some simple ways to make the most of your time with world-leading experts:

  • Listen – It is often easy to focus on reading and copying every little detail from the screen. This may inhibit your chance to listen to what someone, who has studied the topic in incredible detail, has to say. Most lecturers will upload their class materials online, so why not look back on these later and spend some time listening to what is being said?
  • Be comfortable – make sure you are not overly hungry in lectures as allowing your mind to wonder about lunch can be quite distracting. Also take a bottle of water, this will help wake you up for early classes and keep you hydrated.
  • Ask questions – Lectures, and more importantly tutorials, are the perfect opportunity to ask your burning questions. These will help you to understand the topic more fully and it could allow fellow students to appreciate an idea from a different perspective.

  • Preparation and reflection – Doing some reading beforehand on a particular topic can allow you to more readily grasp the key concepts being discussed in classes. Making some notes from your reading or even jotting down a couple of questions can be incredibly useful and will support your lecture notes. Looking back on what you have have discussed at the end of the day or at the end of the week can allow you to draw links with other topics that you have studied, which will be especially useful for exams.
  • Participation – Tutorials are a great opportunity to get involved and share your thoughts and ideas. In smaller groups you can discuss complex topics, while challenging your understanding, and that of others, in an environment that promotes creativity and outside-the-box thinking.
