10 things to do as a student in Edinburgh…

…by  Paula / from Argentina / studies Economic & Social History / 4th year (UG)

You might be new to the City of Edinburgh, or you might just be bored of watching movies nonstop inside your flat. These are 10 things you could do to get yourself to know Edinburgh’s corners a little bit more.

  1. Climb Arthur’s Seat

A must-do during Fresher’s Week, whether you are a fresher or not – the extinct volcano has the most amazing views of the city. The climb is the best way to get to know Edinburgh as a fresher, plus a great way to catch up with friends and do something different if you’re a returning student.

  1. Go on a Day Trip to the Highlands

Glencoe, Loch Lomond, Inverness and for the more adventurous ones, the Isle of Skye. It’s a trip you’ll always cherish and you don’t know if you will have another chance to explore Scotland. The University offers several guided day trips; it’s just a matter of finding the right one for you.

  1. Join a Sports Club

There’s so many to choose from: archery, Frisbee, athletics, rugby… Most clubs accept professional players as well as those wanting to try something. Don’t be scared, you’ll get to know loads of new people as well!

  1. Pub Crawl I hear?

You probably have already noticed that there are more pubs in Edinburgh than days in a month- possibly a year. Grab a couple of friends and try some of the local brews. My favourites? The Three Sisters and The Pear Tree.

  1. Dance

Edinburgh University has more than 260 societies, with many of them being dance-related. Tango, salsa, African dance, capoeira, bhangra- take your pick and get those legs moving!

  1. Get Cultural

The National Museum of Scotland seems like the most obvious choice when deciding on a museum to visit, being right next to the university. But the National Gallery, the National War Museum or the Museum of Childhood are all worth looking at.

  1. Volunteer

There is infinite amount of volunteering opportunities in Edinburgh – so why not give something back to our local community? Just a little time is enough to change the lives of many, so if you have a few hours to spare, look around for your local charity shop or attend one of the Volunteering Fairs the university hosts.

  1. Try a Café every week.

Edinburgh is known for its local cafes, and you will soon find your own favourite. Until then, try saving your change every week and treat yourself to a hot cuppa at one of its many coffee places. My top pick is Kilimanjaro on Nicolson Street.

  1. Barbeque at the Meadows

If you’re lucky enough to experience the sun in Edinburgh, then make your way down to the Meadows. Here you’ll notice everyone around you barbequing and enjoying the warmth on their faces. It’s amazing how the city changes when the windy weather gives us a break, and it’s a must-do while living here.

  1. Do a Ghost Tour

The ghosts of Edinburgh’s past are still around- if you’re into ghost stories and up for some fun, join a walking tour and find out everything there is to know about those who used to (or still do?) live here.

So get yourself going and try something new!
